The 32/64-Bit & CD-ROM Era · 1993â1999
Sega Saturn
Sought After?
Very, especially Japanese-only shooters and RPGs that never got a US release â some now sell for hundreds of dollars.
Downsides
A notoriously difficult dual-CPU architecture that made development harder and more expensive than the competition.
Why It Faded
A botched surprise early launch (four months ahead of the announced date, at retailers Sega hadn't fully briefed) alienated retail partners, and it was consistently outsold and outmarketed by the PlayStation.
Trivia
Sega announced the Saturn's US launch date at E3 1995 â then revealed it had already shipped to select stores days earlier, blindsiding retailers like KB Toys and Walmart who hadn't been included, permanently damaging trust.
