Cult/curiosity value â it's remembered as one of the biggest flops in gaming history, which paradoxically makes it interesting to collectors today.
Downsides
Released the same year as the Sega Saturn, directly cannibalizing and confusing Sega's own product line; required yet another separate power brick and cable mess on top of the Genesis and Sega CD.
Why It Faded
Nobody could explain why a customer should buy a $160 add-on for an aging console when a whole new console (Saturn) was arriving simultaneously. It was discontinued within about a year.
Trivia
Sega famously stacked the Genesis, Sega CD, and 32X together, creating a three-tiered tower of hardware collectors now jokingly call the "Sega Tower of Power."
